"Our values and behaviors are incongruent, and this incongruence causes us a certain degree of moral discomfort."(387)
From the outside looking in, one may say that it's hypocritical to say that you love and care for animals, yet you eat meat. This is something that doesn't add up, yet we usually tend to not see things from this perspective when trying to enjoy a cheese burger or some ribs. Incongruent is defined as, "not suitable or not fitting well with something else." Our morals in this instance, do not match
up with our actions. This is most likely due to the fact that in our mind we don't see a cow or a pig as a pet that we love dearly. "How we feel about an animal and how we treat it, it turns out, has much less to do with what kind of animal it is than about what our perception of it is." (386) We might still love all animals, but in our minds we separate them into different categories to make ourselves feel less guilty wheneating meat. What truly separates a dog from a cow to a cat to a pig? The way we perceive them is truly the biggest difference of all. In the book, it gives us three different options to go about changing this. "We can change our values to match our behaviors." (387) In order to do this we can no longer express our love for ALL animals in the world. We can only love the ones that we don't eat and fight for the ones that we care about. This option is a harsh reality for most animal lovers in our society today. "We can change our behaviors to match our values." (387) This would mean everyone would become a vegetarian. If we truly love all animals like we say we do, then we shouldn't be eating any of them. According to VegetarianTimes.com there approximately 7.3 million people who's behaviors match their values in the United States. "We can change our perception of our behaviors so that they appear to match our values." (387) This is something most Americans are already doing. We don't think about where the meat comes from. Or the poor animal, that we say we love, that was killed for the burger we are enjoying. We enjoy living in a false reality, because we don't have to think about what were actually doing. One day however we are all going to have to realize that we have to face the truth.
"A psychologist friend told me recently that some denial is indeed healthy, and even necessary for survival." (417)
It is hard to imagine a world where everyone is "woke" about everything going on in the world. Woke is a term for someone who is aware of what is going on around them and understands that not everything is black and white as it seems. If we were like this in every situation, then we would be constantly living in more fear than we already are. Living in denial is much easier and allows us to
still see the good in the world. We still believe that there are great people in the world who would stop to help you if your car broke down on the side of the road and you were stranded. If we weren't in denial we would think that most people could care less and wouldn't stop to see if we needed help. This would cause most people to be sad more than they usually are. Denial gives us hope and allows us to get through life a little bit easier. "The thing about denial is that it doesn't feel like denial when it's going on." Georgina Kleege
